4 Quick Steps to Read Your Medical Bill in 5 minutes!

Feb 06, 2025

You shouldn’t need a degree in accounting to understand your medical bill—but I have one, and I’m here to simplify the process for you! In this guide, I’ll walk you through the four-step system to confidently read and review your medical bill, so you can avoid overpaying and take control of your healthcare expenses.

My Journey to Mastering Medical Bills

Hi, I’m Jules, the founder of Medical Bill Academy. When I graduated college—even with my master’s degree in accounting—I was shocked by how complicated the U.S. healthcare system was. My husband and newborn faced life-threatening health issues in my early twenties, and as medical bills piled up, I had to find ways to save thousands of dollars. After successfully navigating my own medical expenses, I started helping friends and family do the same. Now, I’m here to help YOU!

If you’ve ever felt like giving up on saving time and money on medical bills, don’t! You don’t have to untangle this complicated system alone. Make sure to subscribe to stay updated on new strategies to maximize your healthcare savings!

Step 1: Open Your Medical Bill Immediately

This may seem obvious, but it’s crucial: open your medical bill as soon as you receive it.

Why? Because the sooner you review your bill, the more time you have to strategize your next steps—especially if it’s a large bill. Confronting it head-on ensures it doesn’t add to your mental load or become a bigger financial headache later. If you’re reading this, you’re already proactive about saving money. Keep that momentum going!

Let’s look at an example: Olivia had a pediatrician visit with Dr. Smith Pediatrics on June 5th. Now, let’s go through the next steps to break down this bill.

Step 2: Review the Itemized Charges from Your Provider

Check the descriptions of the services listed on your medical bill. If your bill doesn’t include service descriptions, you’re not looking at an itemized bill—which means you need to request one from your provider.

Once you have the itemized bill, verify that all listed services were actually performed. If something seems off, follow up with your provider before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Review Insurance Discounts and Adjustments

Your doctor or hospital has a contract with your insurance company that determines set prices for services. These agreements create “in-network” rates, which significantly reduce your costs.

For example, let’s say an office visit is billed at $260, but because the provider is in-network, your insurance plan applies a $100 discount, lowering the rate to $160.

Additionally, check for insurance adjustments—this is the portion your insurance has paid based on your coverage. To verify accuracy, compare this amount with your Explanation of Benefits (EOB), a separate document from your insurance company. If the numbers don’t match, you may have found a billing error!

Step 4: Check the Math on Your Bill and Evaluate Your Responsibility

Now, let’s do some simple math:

  • Start with the total amount billed.
  • Subtract the insurance discounts and adjustments.
  • The remaining balance is what you owe for the services.

Even after insurance benefits are applied, your final bill may still be negotiable! If the amount due is more than you can afford, ask about:

  • Financial aid applications
  • Discounts
  • Payment plans

Final Thoughts: Take Control of Your Medical Bills

By following these four steps, you’ll be able to confidently read your own medical bill:

  1. Open your bill immediately—don’t put it off.
  2. Review the itemized charges—ensure accuracy.
  3. Check insurance discounts and adjustments— also verify against your EOB.
  4. Evaluate your responsibility—and negotiate if necessary to settle your balance.
